Class 91 locomotives were introduced to the newly-electrified
ECML between London and Leeds in 1989. Initially they operated
with HST sets, replacing one of the two HST power cars. On the
through train to Bradford, the HST power car was able to haul the
train over the non-electrified line from Leeds to Bradford, but
another diesel locomotive was required for the return to Leeds.
Here, 47406 arrives at Bradford Forster Square to couple up to
91003 at the head of the 19.30 to King's Cross, on
7 September 1989. |

On Sunday 27 August, trains between Liverpool and London
were being diverted via Manchester, with diesel haulage between
Liverpool and Crewe. This is the 12.53 from Liverpool Lime Street
to Euston approaching Stockport, behind 31452 and 31450. |

trains, dating from the 1920s, were withdrawn shortly afterwards
and replaced by slightly newer trains, built in 1938. |
