Class 47 at Kirkby Stephen 47471 "Norman Tunna GC" approaching Kirkby Stephen with the 08.35 Euston - Inverness "Clansman", diverted away from the West Coast Main Line due to engineering work. The date was 11 March 1989.
Class 91 at Bradford Class 91 locomotives were introduced to the newly-electrified ECML between London and Leeds in 1989. Initially they operated with HST sets, replacing one of the two HST power cars. On the through train to Bradford, the HST power car was able to haul the train over the non-electrified line from Leeds to Bradford, but another diesel locomotive was required for the return to Leeds. Here, 47406 arrives at Bradford Forster Square to couple up to 91003 at the head of the 19.30 to King's Cross, on 7 September 1989.
Class 31 at Stockport On Sunday 27 August, trains between Liverpool and London were being diverted via Manchester, with diesel haulage between Liverpool and Crewe. This is the 12.53 from Liverpool Lime Street to Euston approaching Stockport, behind 31452 and 31450.
Class 90 at Preston 90017 at Preston, where it had just taken over from a Class 47 on the 16.12 Manchester Piccadilly to Glasgow, on 27 August.
Class 485 at Ryde 485042 approaching Ryde Esplanade on the Isle of Wight with a Shanklin to Ryde Pier Head train on 30 April 1989. These trains, dating from the 1920s, were withdrawn shortly afterwards and replaced by slightly newer trains, built in 1938.
