Two Class 01 shunting locomotives survived
into the 1980s, working on the Holyhead Breakwater railway in North
Wales. This short line was not connected to the rest of the BR network.
The locos are seen here inside the small shed. At the time of this
photograph, 19 August 1980, 01001 (at the rear) had been withdrawn
from service, while 01002 remained in use until March 1981. |

A steam excursion, "Cumbrian Mountain
Express", ran from Preston on 19 April, with steam
haulage Carlisle - Skipton - Carnforth. LMS Jubilee Class 5690 "Leander"
worked the Skipton to Carnforth leg, and is seen here at Skipton. |

New and old at Toton depot in Nottinghamshire
on 29 June 1980. On the left is 56056, newly built for freight traffic,
particularly power station coal. On the right is one of the original
Class 44 "Peaks", 44004 "Great Gable",
which was withdrawn by BR later in 1980, but has been preserved.
With the decline in coal traffic, all Class 56s have now been taken out of
service. |
