coal train on 4 March 2006. The Settle - Carlisle line has become
increasingly important for freight traffic in recent years, particularly
coal from Scotland to power stations in Northern England. |

In South Wales, the branches to Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil diverge
at Abercynon, with a separate station on each line. 143608 is seen

Virgin Trains 221138 at Llandudno Junction on Saturday 3 June, with
the 10.52 Crewe to Holyhead. This would normally be a through train
from London, but weekend engineering works on the West Coast Main
Line meant that it started from Crewe for much of the year. |

A brand-new Class 185 "Desiro" 185116 at Manchester Piccadilly
on 17 June, with the 16.42 to Hull. TransPennine Express have
introduced these trains to replace Class 158s, with the Manchester
to Hull route being the first to benefit from the new trains. |
