With Whernside as a backdrop, 66178 heads south at Ribblehead
with a coal train on 4 March 2006. The Settle - Carlisle line
became quite important for freight traffic in the early 2000s,
particularly coal from Scotland to power stations in Northern
England. |

In South Wales, the branches to Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil
diverge at Abercynon, which used to have a separate station on
each line. 143608 is seen here approaching Abercynon North with
the 13.42 Barry Island to Aberdare on 2 June. A new station has
since been built to serve both lines. |

Virgin Trains 221138 at Llandudno Junction on Saturday 3
June, with the 10.52 Crewe to Holyhead. This would normally be a
through train from London, but weekend engineering works on the
West Coast Main Line meant that it started from Crewe for much of
the year. |

A brand-new Class 185 "Desiro" 185116 at Manchester
Piccadilly on 17 June, with the 16.42 to Hull. TransPennine
Express introduced these trains to replace Class 158s, with the
Manchester to Hull route being the first to benefit from the new
trains. |
