During the summer of 2004, the direct line between Norwich
and London was blocked by work to increase the headroom in
Ipswich Tunnel. As a result, some Norwich - London trains were
diverted via Cambridge, bringing electric locomotives to the
London - Cambridge line after an absence of many years. This is
90018, on hire from EWS to 'one' Anglia, passing through
Broxbourne with the 07.51 Norwich to Liverpool Street on 31
July 2004. |

375616 at Hastings on 29 March. The Class 375 trains (and the
similar 376 and 377) began working on the Southern 3rd-rail
network from 2002, as part of the programme to replace all Mk1
passenger stock in regular service. |

An innovation by Arriva Trains Northern during 2003 and 2004
was the use of a loco-hauled train on the Settle-Carlisle route
and for a commuter working between Leeds and Knaresborough. This
picture shows the evening empty stock working, from Knaresborough
to Knottingley, passing through Poppleton station on 5 August
2004. 37408 "Loch Rannoch" is at the front of the
train, while 37698 is at the rear (out of sight). The driver is
handing the token for the Hammerton - Poppleton single line
section to the signalman. |
