Germany - DR

Deutsche Reichsbahn was the East German state railway company, and it remained in existence until merging with DB in 1994. These photos were all taken in April 1991, a few months after German reunification.

DR Class 112 at Halberstadt The single-cab Class 112 diesel locomotives (later DB Class 202) were common on light passenger and freight duties. Here, 112 534 shunts empty coaching stock at Halberstadt on 14 April 1991.
DR Class 251 at Königshütte The Class 251 25kV electric locomotives, later DB Class 171, were confined to the Rübelandbahn in the Harz region. 251 008 is waiting to depart from Königshütte with the 13.50 to Blankenburg on 14 April 1991. Passenger services have been withdrawn but part of the line remains open for freight.

DR Harz steam at Alexisbad DR operated a number of narrow-gauge steam railways in East Germany, and most have survived as tourist railways, although now privately owned. On the Harz Mountains network, 99 7244 is seen at Alexisbad with the 12.59 Stiege to Harzgerode on 15 April.
DR Class 243 at Rostock 243 234 at Rostock Hbf after arrival with the 07.00 from Leipzig on 16 April. This successful type of locomotive worked throughout Germany (as Class 143) after reunification, mostly on S-Bahn services.
DR Class 132 at Rostock 132 630 at Rostock Hbf, on the 07.26 from Wismar to Stralsund on 17 April 1991. Over 800 of this family of locomotive (nicknamed "Ludmilla") were built for passenger and freight in the DDR, and many have survived into the 2020s as Classes 232 and 234, now limited to freight.
