This railway conveys huge quantities of coal from mines in
KwaZulu/Natal to Richards Bay on the Indian Ocean coast north
of Durban, in trains 2.5km long and weighing 10,000 tonnes. Not
bad for a railway with a gauge of only 3ft 6in (1065mm). The
picture shows 5 locomotives at the head of such a train,
approaching the Richards Bay export terminal on 17 April
1998. |
