The new trains for East Coast Main Line operator LNER ordered for their predecessors Virgin Trains under the Intercity Express Programme, entered passenger service on 14 May, 2019. On Sunday 19 May, 800103, with Azuma branding, was seen at Leeds on the 09.40 to King’s Cross.

Class 230 units, converted by Vivarail from former London Underground vehicles, entered service in early 2019, initially on the Bedford to Bletchley line. This is 230004 at Bedford, having just arrived with the 14.01 from Bletchley on 10 June.

Great Northern also began operating new trains in 2019, these being Class 717 of the Siemens Desiro City family. This is 717003 passing through Finsbury Park in North London, with a Moorgate to Hornsey Depot empty stock working on 30 May.

The much-disliked Pacer diesel units should have been withdrawn by the end of 2019, but some were retained into 2020. 142031 arrives at New Mills Central on 9 June with the 14.14 Sheffield to Manchester Piccadilly stopping service.
